One of the keystones of a Continuous Improvement Model is the goal of Sustainability. Much of modern business has lost its way due to impatience and short-term vision, which has led to great economic unrest.
Sustainability requires the stability of the Triple Bottom Line: People, Planet, and Profits. If you think of this as a three-legged stool, you can see how removing one leg (or even shortening it) will eliminate that stool's ability to stand over time. If we don't consider People (the Human Factor) we inevitably create turnover and churn, which can eat enormous amounts of a company's operating costs. (Estimates run to 150% of annual salary.) If we don't consider the Profits, we can't continue to pay the people or stay in business. If we don't consider the Planet, we destroy resources that could have offered sustainable profit, harm the people who work for us, and have nothing to hand down to the next generation.
